1st Time at Universal Studio Japan

In March, Super Nintendo World debuted in Universal Studios Japan. However, with the ebbing and flowing of waves of uptick in COVID-19 cases, Japan declared multiple states of emergency and USJ was forced to close its door to visitors for quite some time, and thereby our plan to visit Mario Bros had to be postponed several times. All that waiting and it did not disappoint. Super Nintendo World is like a real life video game, you really feel transported into this digital kingdom that we all grew up with. Can easily stay there the whole day!

Ways to Get Tickets

  • Official Website: when tickets sold out on English translation website, you can try Japanese site.

  • Hotels: some hotels reserve tickets for guests, but you can’t buy it ahead of time.

  • Convenient Store: you might be able to get the ticket from Osaka convenient stores, but I haven’t verified this information.

Roller Coaster List

  • Flying Dino: You need to lay on your stomach. Made me a bit nauseous!

  • Space Fantasy: One of our favorite rides. It’s like coffee mugs on steroids!

  • Hollywood Backdrop: The most popular ride.

Universal Studios Hollywood, Orlando, and Japan have many similarities, including some of the rides. UN and I love USO, but with the new Super Nintendo World, USJ is now our favorite. From the scenery to the various games, the intricate details put into designing SNW will make you fall in love with this place (and also make you willing to shell out many coins). Purchasing the Power Band (3000 yen) allows you to collect “coins”, “keys”, and stickers. Certain games can only be “unlocked” once you have collected enough keys. The staff over there are super helpful and gave me many tips to help me win. The Power Band is paired with the USJ App on your phone via QR Code, which allows you to compete with other players in the park on that day to see who collected the most coins. The App also tells you the wait time of every ride, quite useful!

Japan is not in summer break yet, therefore the lines weren’t very long, the wait was on average 10-15 minutes only. Even for the very popular Hollywood Dream, the wait was only 20 minutes. You will read on the internet that you should arrive at the park an hour before opening to skip the long lines, but perhaps due to the pandemic, many of the attractions and restaurants were either closed or opened after 11am. USJ also has a City Walk, and it even has convenient stores. Notable is a whole food court featuring the Osaka delicacy Takoyaki. There are various world cuisines that you could choose from, but they all closed at 8pm due to Japan’s state of emergency regulation.

Our Osaka trip’s main mission was to visit USJ, and it was so much fun! Remember to keep social distance when taking picture with characters!

  • Flying Dinosour:

  • Space Fantacy:

  • Hollywood Backdrop:
