Fishermen’s Superstitions

Can’t wait to do it again!

We went deep sea fishing again! And the bounty was plentiful! My highlight was seeing my spirit animal: DOLPHINS!! Initially my lines kept breaking, I was afraid that would set the tone for the rest of the day. Was I standing at the wrong spot? Did I do something tabooed for fishermen? Or did I turn a fish over when I was eating it at home? (Taiwanese fishermen believe that turning a fish over will cause the ship to capsize.) If I had any reception, I would’ve googled the superstitions that fishermen believe in. I know I was desperate!

Tales of fishing superstitions are many, and can probably take days to go over all of them, even Pirates of the Caribbean mentioned some nautical taboos. Fishermen have their own superstitions. Our fishing club believes that eating convenient store fried chicken before going fishing and not taking out the cooler early will lead to a bountiful catch. I learned many other no-nos for fishermen from our deckhands. Only time will tell if these are correlated with catching bigger fish.

  • Don’t bring bananas onto the boat: this originated from early days of food transport across oceans, and due to the lack of proper equipment, bananas ripen easily and often are unsellable before they get to the next port. But this has nothing to do with fishing. Our deckhand debunked this superstition, he said he ate bananas the day that he caught a 500lbs marlin. After Google search, some people even believe that anything related to bananas such as “Banana Boat” sunscreen should not be brought to sea. I now remember seeing a sign at a pier that says “no bananas”, and I thought that was to prevent people from slipping on banana peels. Lol!

  • Pouring alcohol onto the line spool: After our deckhand finished setting up trolling (to fish for marlin), he asked us for beer. I thought it was because it was a hot day and he was thirsty, but he poured the whole can onto the line spool! Then he told us that it’s telling the fish that the bar is open, and fish are alcoholics too! This made me laugh, but apparently a marlin took our bait but got away! Hmmm...

To summarize this trip: initially I was disappointed by the breaking fishing lines, then became worried about committing fishing taboos. It wasn’t until my first catch (a fat tuna)! I started to become more encouraged, and could finally enjoy fishing. Even briefly forgot there’s such a thing as fishermen’s superstitions. Instead of worrying about all these things, I say don’t think too much about it and just enjoy fishing!

Manta Ray in Ishigaki

I’ve waited a long time for this moment, finally got to see a manta ray fly above me! Like many of the remote islands, Ishigaki is very beautiful. Even on a cloudy day, the water was crystal clear blue. After the sun went down, I was dazzled by the countless glittering stars decorating the night sky. Our itinerary was simple, meeting mantas was our only goal.

Sightseeing

Kabira Bay

Come here at night to see meteors. Zero light pollution here.
The starlit sky with late summer breeze, how I wish we could camp here overnight!

Ishigaki Yaima Village

An obasan performer of traditional Ishigaki dance and culture shocked us with her hospitality. She unselfishly taught us how to play an instrument made out of small wooden planks, and performed folk dancing for us. Featured in this park are also golden monkeys from South America. They are very friendly and do not shy away from interacting with visitors.

Ishigaki is full of flowers and other green plants. Some of the houses are furnished with stone walls in their front yard. Ishigaki translates to stone wall. According to my friend E, snakes love to hide in the cracks inside these stone walls (k bye)!

Due to the weather, we weren’t able to visit other islands surrounding Ishigaki, but luckily we got to scuba dive and see manta rays the day before the typhoon landed. Crossed another one off my list. Hopefully I can visit the other islands next time!

P.S. If you get a rental car, FILL UP the gas and KEEP THE RECEIPT before you return the car!!!

Kabira Bay

Ishigaki Yaima Village

Japan's Most Sacred Shrine: Ise Jingu

v Snapseed 17.jpg

Ise was our beautiful accidental adventure. Before I left for Kumamo Kodo, I told UN I wanted to visit Ine, but UN misunderstood me and thought I said Ise. We realized the mixup when he told me the itinerary he planned. So that’s how we came to Ise.

Accommodation

One Ancient Rest Inn
https://www.hotespa.net/hotels/ikyu/

UN thoughtfully planned an onsen ryokan so that my tired legs and body can enjoy some R&R after hiking Kumano Kodo. Our ryokan was conveniently located near Ise Jingu, comes with breakfast, dinner and ramen for midnight snack. Every meal was delicate and spectacular. We enjoyed Ise shrimp (more like a lobster) and Matsusaka beef. The onsen was perfect!

Day One

We picked up our rental car at Kansai Airpot and drove 3 hours east to Ise, part of Mie prefecture. On the way, we passed by Nara, Iga, and Matsusaka. I filled UN in on the heroics of our Kumano Kodo hike as we passed by the rice fields and countryside along the freeway.

Day Two

Ise Grand Shrine | Butasute | Akafuku

Back in the days when pilgrims traveled by foot, they would rest and replenish their energy at omotesando before they proceed to worship at the shrine. I absolutely love the food at the omotesando leading to Ise Jingu, it lives up to its reputation for being the most delicious omotesando in all of Japan. Two of my favorites are Butasute and Akafuku. Butasute translates to “throw away pork”, they sell only beef dishes: gyu-don, beef sukiyaki, beef yakiniku, gyu-nabe, and beef croquettes. Min-ji is salted flavor, and croquette is sweet flavor. Akafuku is known for their sweets, I am a fan of their signature mochi-filled red bean paste, and UN likes their shaved ice. We like it so much that we went back several times during our three days there. Ise Jingu is the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan, houses the sacred mirror, one of three sacred items linked to Japanese mythology. Ise Jingu has an inner shrine (Neiku) and an outer shrine (Geku), and they serve different functions.

Day Three

Meoto Iwa (Couple Rock) | Osatsu Ama Hut

We got up before breakfast to enjoy walking through the empty and quiet omotesando before the busyness of the day starts. After breakfast we drove to the nearby Meoto Iwa (Couple Rock). TBH, a bit underwhelming and smaller than we expected. For lunch we went to one of the Ama Diver shacks. They serve very fresh seafood at these shacks. We learned about Ama Divers from watching local TV. These are usually couples who fish for fresh seafood, the husband would drive the boat, and the wife would free dive and search for seafood. The shack serves fresh catch-of-the-day seafood, and are cooked live in front of guests on charcoal. Many of these Ama Divers are well in their 60s and 70s and love what they do.

Day Four

Nara | Todai Ji

We stayed the night at Nara and visited Todai Ji, which houses the tallest Buddha in all of Japan. Compared to before the pandemics, Nara is quieter and less crowded, and subsequently the deers appeared scrawnier.

Our Ine trip became Ise trip, spent a lot time in onsen and ate lots of delicious delicacies. Highly recommend visiting Ise!

https://www.hotespa.net/hotels/ikyu/
