Shelter In Place: Week 1 Check-In | 第一週自主隔離

Happy 3rd Wedding Anniversary! Originally we had planned a getaway to Ishigaki Island, but due to COVID-19, we were issued restriction of movement by UN’s command, we cancelled all of our plans and stayed at home. Disappointed of course, but I’m rather calm, and decided to use all this stay at home time to work on my shelter-in-place to-do list! God, I love making to-do lists.

Dalgona Coffee | 400

Dalgona coffee is everywhere! We need to pick a perfect day to make this insta coffee! Get the cheapest instant coffee in Commisary (hey, don’t be a coffee snob), mix with sugar and hot water. Stir it for 400 times, or use hand mixer for faster result. Voila!

Jjapaguri |

After preparing Jjapaguri, UN and I wonder how the maid in Parasite cooked it under 8 minutes while fighting and cleaning up at the same time. We kept laughing just thinking about that scene in the movie.

Sunflower Field |

Before the restriction of movement order came down, my friend L and I went to visit a local sunflower field. To know Okinawa means navigating its small alleys well, and you will be surprised by what lies hidden within. Don’t need to go all the way to Miyagi Island to look for sunflowers, you can find these off the side of the street.

Took me exactly three days to adjust to this new rhythm of life. The hardest thing is social distancing myself from the fridge. Occasionally I do my morning run. I love saying “ohaiyo” to the old lady that lives across the street. On the way back I would sometimes run into the old couple that live in our building taking their daily walk. Right now in Okinawa, only military and SOFA status personnel are required to remain shelter-in-place. UN goes into clinic every other day. Most restaurants now offer takeout service. Base tightened restrictions. I’ll utilize the shelter-in-place time to work on more posts. Stay tuned for my Instagram updates featuring many #throwback pics. Stay safe and healthy everyone!

Niseko Snowboarding Trip |

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_b5bc.jpg

Still can’t believe we made it to Hokkaido in February! We just got back from the US the night before we were to leave for Sapporo. But UN’s flight got delayed and he had to stay overnight in Tokyo, and we spent Valentine’s Day apart. UN flew from Tokyo back to Okinawa that morning, and immediately checked in for flight to Sapporo. As for me, I stayed up late to re-pack my luggage, also jet lagged. Ate Coco’s at 4 am, went for a run and took a shower. Thought I had some time to take a quick nap. Overslept and woke up an hour before my takeoff time. It’s a miracle I made it to the airport on time!

First time snowboarding in Hokkaido, fell in love with Niseko’s ski resort! Food was delicious, and powder snow is a game changer for me. The best part is that you can hop into onsen after snowboarding. No wonder Niseko is so popular for winter sport enthusiasts. Hands down the best snowboarding experience ever. Do not miss the soft serve at ski resort, very creamy. While organizing pictures, I came across seafood that we ate at Otaru. I can taste the sweetness of the crab in my mouth just thinking about it!

Oki Weekend No.2 | 沖繩週末 2

Another sunny morning followed by stormy afternoon here in Okinawa. Many outdoor activities were therefore cancelled. We decided last minute to go to the aquarium instead. The aquarium was closed for two weeks due to COVID-19 (now reopened). There’s visibly less tourists there. Hopefully coronavirus situation resolved soon and Okinawa can return back to normal. At the same time I hope everyone stays healthy.

Ufuya |

This restaurant has been on my list for some time, I even noted reservation is needed. Instead we came here on a whim and set our mind on waiting in line. But due to decreased tourism, we only waited for 5 minutes, and we even got to choose our seats. We ordered Okinawa Agu Pork Tonkatsu, little did we know it’s a fan favorite. Next time we come I want to order the hot pot!

Bloom Coffee

Have vegan dessert option! Bloom Coffee is surrounded by greenery. Perfect for Sunday afternoon with a friend or two, and just enjoy Okinawa sunshine. This day, UN had 12-hour duty, so my friend and I spent our Sunday after church chatting. Relaxing vibes, occasionally had roast coffee bean aroma.

This COVID-19 pandemic made people feel like it’s end of the world. Although Okinawa hasn’t seen everyone line up to clear the shelves of daily essentials, the pictures and posts on social media showing empty shelves in supermarket and grocery stores worry me. Some of my friends said New York feels like a ghost town. Even our old church has switched to online service. This weighs heavy on my heart but we still need to stay positive, take necessary precautions, and stay healthy through this critical time!
