PADI Open Water License |

(Please scroll down for English translation.)

執照是PADI(國際潛水協會)認證,一班學生不超過六人。

My instructor Everett and classmates!

My instructor Everett and classmates!

I am now PADI certified open water scuba diver!!! PTL that we safely resurfaced. Also thoroughly amazed by the beauty of God’s creation down in the deep blue ocean!

Being the beach boy that he is, UN signed me up for open water diving class the first week we got to Okinawa. The class was one week long, first two days in the classroom, second two days in the pool, and weekend in open water! It was a busy week, but not only did I get to see the beautiful water world, I also got to know myself more!

We started learning some skills on the first day we got into the pool. Everything went smoothly until when we got to 12 ft and I had to fully flood my mask and clear it. I totally freaked out!!! Water got into my nose and I felt like I was drowning, lost control and instinctively tried to resurface (a big no no in scuba diving). Thankfully my instructor held onto me and calmed me down so I could master this very important skill!

Terrified from that incidence, I had nightmares about drowning, and didn’t sleep well that night. I was so physically and mentally tired that I didn’t want to continue on the second day. I hesitated going into the pool on the second day, and even told UN that I wanted to go home. After I said those words, I went back into the water (what a dramatic change!) Glad to report second day went splendidly and I mastered all the skills taught that day.

On the weekend we practiced in open water, and dove for a total of four times. The view under the sea was spectacular, so thankful that my instructor, classmates and UN were so encouraging and didn’t let me give up. They even helped me carried the very heavy oxygen tank when the waves were crashing on me, and made sure that I was good at all times!

Some people have asked me about the class, here’s some info:
Our certification class was done through a military base dive shop, and is PADI certified. Each class has no more than 6 people. Costs about $300 USD per person, and includes instruction materials, dive computer, equipment rentals (need to purchase your own mask, snorkel, shoes and fins), and it lasts for a whole week. The last two days of open water dive, the instructor will determine suitable dive spots according to the weather that day. We started the day’s dive at 6:30 am. We dove for a total of four times and down to 60 ft. The first three dives were skills testing and the last dive was a fun dive. After we passed all written and underwater skills testing we will receive our PADI certification in the mail!

Birthday Week at Tokyo DisneySea |

(Please scroll down for English translation.)

10+ years later, I’m back in Tokyo Disney. When I came with my mom, because she was afraid of heights, we couldn’t go on most of the rides. To make up for my disappointment, she took many pictures of me with the characters and asked for their autographs. She also bought me many toys, plush toys, and cookies (the empty boxes I still keep). The funniest part is she would take pictures of me with the rides and asked me to imagine how fun it would be to go on them (maybe that’s why UN thinks I have very fantastic imagination!)

We arrived to Disneysea on the first day of their Halloween theme. The merchandise were so cute that I had an internal struggle with my compulsive buying behavior (almost took home a giant size Duffy).

We thought the park would be less busy on a Tuesday, we thought wrong! If you follow me on Instagram, you saw how many queues we stood in. Thank God we purchased the tickets back in Okinawa and avoided the line at the entrance ticket booth. That heat and humidity was trying, but in order to eat all the recommended Tokyo Disneysea exclusive snacks, we persevered through it. The Halloween special treats lived up to the hype, delicious and cute, definitely worth the wait. Very happy I could spend my birthday here, thanks UN for including this surprise as a part of our Tokyo trip.

P.S. I think my wisdom tooth is coming out! I had to stop eating because of the pain!

We cross out activity list number 4!

Zip lining in Okinawa |

(Please scroll down for English translation.)

Let’s cross out activity list number 3!

Totally did not expect this level of difficulty with ziplining! Of the various ziplining places we’ve been to, this one is definitely he most physically demanding and mentally challenging one. After the instructor explained to us how to operate the equipment, he then informed us that we will be navigating through each course in the park by ourselves, me and UN looked at each other stunned. We’ve never hooked up our own zipline before, there has always been staff at each station to help us. All we want to do is slide. In addition to ziplining, there’s rock climbing, balance beams, and Tarzan swings as parts of the adventure course. I got so scared at the Tarzan swing that I couldn’t move. But to be honest, having done it, that part was very fun. Despite being afraid of heights himself, UN cheered me on to help me cope with my fears. I love my UN so much!!

It’s very scenic here, you have views of the ocean and the mountains. Highly recommended for all those who visit Okinawa. The park provides fanny packs for valuables and water. My advise is to bring lots of sunblock, reapply often, or risk getting sunburned like me! Throughout the course there’s alternative paths that are more palatable for those who are more risk-adverse.
